why i coach
At 18 I came to Canada for my undergraduate degree. I came for what I thought was a university education, but I didn’t realize I was coming for a whole new life. A life I wasn’t prepared for, or know was possible.
People were surprised I could speak English, and even more surprised at how well. Many assumed I was facing culture shock. I was, but not the kind you think. We knew about the movies, the music, and the food before we got here. It was the small things that made up the way of life that came as a shock. An entire shift in the fundamental structure of how people interact with one another and how to find a place for oneself - that was the real challenge.
With a traditional Muslim upbringing, I had been primed for a life of marriage and family. I chose to build my own life in Canada, going against the grain of what I’d been bred for. This meant, I didn’t have the skills or know what to do to be successful in this country, because I’d never been taught! I learned the hard way - by making mistakes. I wish I knew then what I know now.
I can’t go back and help my 18-year old self, but I can help others. With the skills and information I’ve gathered, I created a programme to help newcomers redefine success, and navigate the challenges of life in a new country.
If you’re an international or newcomer student, or recently arrived in a new country for work or to be with family, I feel your challenges, fears, and struggles. If you’re a parent of an international student and want to see your child well-adjusted. You’re not alone.
I’d love to connect with you and see how I can help.
